Sofia Richie and Scott Disick return to LAX after receiving backlash for Saudi Arabian music fest

Sofia Richie and Scott Disick did not appear to be in great spirits when they were spotted walking out of LAX airport in Los Angeles on Saturday.

This is the first time the couple have been seen since they were slammed for attending the MDL Beast Fest in Saudi Arabia.

The model was reportedly paid six figures to attend and promote the inaugural festival in a country notorious for its human rights violations.

The 21-year-old sported a matching white sweatshirt and sweatpants set with black and white trainers.

Disick, 36, donned a black hoodie with grey sweatpants and white sneakers as he and Richie exited the terminal.

She actively documented her time in the capital city Riyadh for the three-day music festival.

Richie and her squad were chauffeured around the city and to the festival in a private helicopter.

She was also spotted hanging out with fellow model Joan Smalls in the VIP section of the event.

But fans and followers were quick to call her out on her attendance, given the country’s horrifying track record.

Human rights lawyer Gissou Nia tweeted a screenshot of a mirror selfie Richie took with some friends, which was captioned: ‘Saudi girls.’

Nia wrote: ‘Seeing the caption “Saudi girls” is especially grating when I think of Saudi women’s rights activists jailed or exiled for pushing for basic freedoms.’

Last year, women’s rights activist Loujain al-Hathloul was one of several to be arrested after campaigning for the right to drive, subsequently facing extreme torture in prison.

Other recent instances include last year’s government-sanctioned murder of journalist Jamal Kashogg and the outing of two gay journalists, where homosexuality is illegal and punishable by death.

Alessandra Ambrosio was also one of the celebs reportedly paid to attend the festival.

The former Victoria’s Secret Angel has since returned to Los Angeles as well, where she was spotted Monday shopping for flowers.

She took to Instagram with fellow Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana from the star-studded festival.

Ambrosio was also called out, one follower commenting: ‘What is the price to promote repression?

‘What amount of money was enough for you to distract from human rights violations? What digit was enough for you to stain your hands with the blood of lgbt+/reporters/women/etc?’

The event also drew the likes of such celebs as Winnie Harlow, Irina Shayk, Luka Sabbat, Armie Hammer and Ryan Phillippe.

Meanwhile, Emily Ratajkowski recently revealed that she declined an invite to the music festival.

Citing her reasons for not attending, the model explained: ‘It is very important to me to make clear my support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community, freedom of expression and the right to a free press.

‘I hope coming forward on this brings more attention to the injustices happening there.’

Diet Prada also claimed that ‘six-figure sums were offered for attendance and geo-tagged posts.’

The music festival is seen by many to be an attempt at changing Saudi Arabia’s image.

Nicki Minaj previously backed out of her headlining performance at this summer’s Jeddah World Fest, following pressure from human rights groups.

She said in a statement: ‘After careful reflection I have decided to no longer move forward with my scheduled concert at Jeddah World Fest.

‘While I want nothing more than to bring my show to fans in Saudi Arabia, after better educating myself on the issues, I believe it is important for me to make clear my support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community and freedom of expression.’
